Event Camp Twin Cities
As you may already know, a fantastic event was held in Minneapolis, MN for the events industry. On September 8 & 9, 2010, Event Camp Twin Cities made waves in the community by holding a hybrid event focused on Social, Innovation, Experimentation and Collaboration. I recently wrote about the bleeding edge elements of the event in my monthly column with Event Solutions Magazine…but I wanted to blog about 1 very specific takeaway for me: The Importance of Taking Risk

A big thank you to Samuel J Smith and Ray Hansen for taking risks that opened my eyes to new ways of holding events.

Thanks for this post Lara. I agree that the ability of Sam and Ray to take risks was, for the most part, what made Event Camp Twin Cities so wonderful.
I’ve found that this ability is much easier to learn if you make friends with failure. Sam and Ray did a wonderful job of this by announcing that ECTC would be all about experimentation and that some of these experiments were bound to fail. They drew attention to the fact that lessons would be learned no matter what the outcome and encouraged attending event planners to take the ideas presented and improve on them in their own events.
I think it behooves us all to let go of our perfectionism. It’s virtually impossible to grow and be perfect at the same time. Growth is messy, especially if it’s fast. Embracing flaws sets a good example and encourages risk-taking and creativity. Sam and Ray created an environment where all of this could flourish and I’m very happy that it was (and will continue to be) so public.
Well said, Jenise! It was great meeting you in Minneapolis! Cheers.
