I didn’t think I’d have a chance to write while at the ISES EventWorld conference…but lo and behold, I found some time in between the conference and the many parties! I just finished a very full day of educational meetings – by far my favorite was a wonderful keynote by Mark Tewksbury. For those of you who are not Canadian, Mark is a former Olympic gold medalist in the 100m backstroke. Since his win in 1992, he’s been public speaking to groups about achieving excellence.
I’ve been to numerous industry events – within the branding and the special events worlds. Never have I been entertained like I was in Mark’s “Achieving Event Excellence. The Real Legacy is YOU.” session. He successfully married his experience in sports, specifically with the Olympics, with the challenges and opportunities in the events industry. He’s a masterful story teller and builds such convincing analogies that you actually believe that somehow your everyday obstacles rival that of an Olympic athlete.
He was funny, charming, and a little bit goofy. He’s extremely animated…and not one person was left seated by the end of his keynote. Perhaps I’m still buzzing from my high 12 hours ago, but I highly recommend that you book Mark for your next team building-, motivational- or inspirational-based event. He’s a speaker that’s guaranteed to make people think, laugh (and maybe even shed a little tear).
