For those of you who were eagerly anticipating the start of our Twitter EventProfs chat this evening, you too probably received the above message when logging on. From whales floating through the air in slings held by birds to worms and smiling ice cream cones, Twitter has tried very hard to make annoying service interruptions cute. I’m afraid that despite a delightfully adorable cartoon, I’m still feeling disgruntled. I eagerly anticipate my twice weekly chats with some of the best minds in our business. I usually end the convos feeling flushed in the cheeks – from frenzied and insightful discussions on topics that keep us all up at night.
Is this a true sign of the times? After all, Twitter has seen unbelievable growth (almost 1400% from Feb ’08 to Feb ’09 – according to a nielsen study). I can’t turn on the television without seeing a story on what a famous celebrity tweeted or how a station has launched their own Twitter accounts.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m thrilled that Twitter is gaining the success it so deserves. I just wish we could use it 🙂
UPDATE: There have been some suggestions of possibly moving the chat off of Twitter. Do you like using Twitter because it’s easy and convenient. Or, would you prefer to move the chat offline? VOTE here.

Good recommendation, Nicole. Any suggestions for a chat site?

Have you thought about using the Twitter-like service Today’s Meet: http://todaysmeet.com.

Hi Cliff, I did sign up for this a while back http://todaysmeet.com/eventprofs – so maybe we can try it out if there are service interruptions in the future. Only problem is that if there are interruptions there are no ways of letting ppl know your chat has moved 🙂
We could move it permanently, but we get a lot of exposure by having it one Twitter. Your suggestion may warrant a vote with the eventprofs members – whether to keep the chat on Twitter or move it to another chat room.
Thanks!!
Lara

Thre are some other options we could use too like “Tiny Chat” which could be embedded on your blog Lara or Meebo. I prefer Twitter though.
