Designers consistently look to DIFFA’s Dining by Design events for the latest trends in tabletop & ambient design.
Think outside the centerpiece
Go unconventional with your table decorations. Think large, impactful pieces such as oversized table lamps (K).
Instead of centerpieces, go ‘side’pieces – creating a beatufil, large montage of objects at the side of the table, freeing up cross-table sightlines (B).
Art with impact
Oversized art that creates a strong focal point and a mood (C & K). Because we don’t all have beautiful, impactful art pieces in our back pocket, consider renting art (as previously featured on the blog here).
Make the table into the art (A) by continuing the look of the tabletop onto the wall. I posted about this stunning effect that was featured in a recent edition of Grace Ormonde (seen here – see the last image).
Don’t be afraid to project the art (L & M). Not only does this give you the freedome to create any art you want, but also at any size you need. Oh, and it’s cheap, easy, and the only transportation required is a projector. I also posted about this technique here.
Use unconventional objects to create art impact (H).
Create a mood
Color and lighting in design can be your best friends. Use color to create an ambient mood (E). Just remember to select colors that compliment skin tones – especially when the focus of the event is dining.
Lighting can create drama and a visually engaging backdrop (G). What makes this concept so successful is the layering of texture on top of the lighting.
Go eclectic
Ethnic influences have been around for quite a while now – but they feel more updated when paired with contemporary design (I).
Another trend we’ve seen for a while (but I never tire of it) is mixing chair styles (J).
Update standard mirrored tabletops with decals (M).
